Sample Unit Plans
These are examples of unit plans I have designed for 9th grade Biology. These units have been designed using the Understanding By Design backward planning philosophy. The ecology unit is a hypothetical unit designed to address California state science content standards for grades 9-12, Biological Sciences 6a-g. The unit encourages the development of twenty-first century skills through the use of project-based learning. The primary assessment of the unit encourages collaboration among students to think critically about issues affecting local ecosystems, and developing a multimedia presentation for the class.
The cell unit has been implemented in my classroom, similarly using the principles of backward planning and the development of twenty-first century skills. The assessment plan includes reinforcement of key concepts through a variety of activities, including an online module, animations, multiple laboratory experiments, and text analysis. This proved to be a successful means of making abstract concepts comprehensible to a diverse population of learners in my classroom.

Sample Lesson Plans: Biology and Physiology
These are a few of the lesson plans I have created for my Biology and Physiology classes. They are written in the Dominican University of California lesson plan format, which is extremely useful for the analysis of class demographics and consideration of planning instruction adapted to the needs of all learners, including English Learners and students with special needs.

Sample Classroom Video: The Calvin Cycle
This is a twenty minute video of me teaching my Biology class. In this lesson we have reviewed the light dependent reactions of photosynthesis, then move into a discussion of the Calvin Cycle, or light-independent reactions, of photosynthesis. The video shows guided note taking with a Power Point presentation, followed by a small group activity where students review their notes with a partner, then use those notes to create quiz questions. The students then get to ask other groups their questions.

Sample Formal Assessments
This is a simple mid-unit quiz that I designed for a unit on Biochemistry. At this point in the unit, the class had studied the properties of water, the pH scale, and the four biological macromolecules (protein, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and lipids). I used the information from this assessment to inform my instruction for the remainder of the unit, which dealt heavily with enzyme chemistry. These samples represent a range of achievement in the class.
